Arsenal 1 x 0 Newcastle: Eze strikes early to keep title hopes alive
Premier League | Emirates Stadium | 25 April 2026
Arsenal did what they had to — and at this stage of the season, that is enough.
With an early goal, the Gunners beat Newcastle 1–0 at home and temporarily reclaimed the top spot in the Premier League, keeping the title race alive in an increasingly tense run-in.
Early goal and a balanced contest
The game started with immediate impact.
In the 9th minute, from a short corner routine, Madueke found Kai Havertz, who quickly set up Eberechi Eze just outside the box. The midfielder struck first-time with power and precision, leaving Nick Pope with no chance.
1–0.
A goal that shapes both the game — and its emotional narrative.
Despite going behind, Newcastle did not collapse.
They enjoyed more possession at times (57% after 20 minutes) and looked to respond with greater attacking volume. At the 29-minute mark, Tonali forced an excellent save from David Raya with a long-range effort.
The game remained evenly balanced. By halftime, possession was split (50% each), but Newcastle had registered more shots: 9 to Arsenal’s 3 — albeit with limited accuracy on target.
More volume does not always mean more control.
Pressure without precision
The tempo dropped in the second half.
Arsenal began to control possession more (53%) and manage the game, while Newcastle searched for openings but struggled to turn their approach play into clear-cut chances.
In the 74th minute, a moment of tension: Nick Pope rushed out of his area, miscontrolled the ball and brought down the attack. He was shown a yellow card, with VAR reviewing the incident — but no upgrade to a red.
Shortly after, in the 79th minute, Newcastle had their best chance of the game. Yoane Wissa met a cross in space, one-on-one with Raya, but fired over the bar, wasting a clear opportunity to equalise.
At this level, those moments tend to define the outcome.
Arsenal responded. In the 86th minute, Ødegaard cut inside from the right and struck well, forcing a solid save from Pope.
In stoppage time, Newcastle pushed forward, pinning Arsenal back but failing to create a clean chance. On the break in the 93rd minute, Gyökeres had space to seal the game but misplaced the final pass.

Top spot under pressure
The final whistle confirmed a win worth more than just three points.
Arsenal move back — at least temporarily — to the top of the Premier League and keep their title hopes alive. The pressure now shifts to Manchester City, who must win to reclaim first place.
For Newcastle, the picture is very different.
Eddie Howe’s side are enduring a season below expectations, with recurring issues in turning attacking volume into efficiency — a problem that resurfaced once again here.
In the final stretch, it’s not enough to play well in spells. You have to decide games.
And today, Arsenal did exactly that.
