Atlético Madrid 1–1 Arsenal: penalties decide a tense game and leave semi-final wide open
Champions League | Riyadh Air Metropolitano | April 29, 2026
Atlético Madrid and Arsenal played out a match defined by control, tension and fine margins — ultimately decided by two identical moments.
In the first leg of the Champions League semi-final, a 1–1 draw leaves the tie completely open. Arsenal took the lead in the first half, Atlético responded after the break, and the second leg now heads to London with no clear favourite.
It was less chaotic than other semi-finals — but no less competitive.
Atlético control, Arsenal efficiency
The early stages painted a clear picture: Atlético on the ball, Arsenal waiting for the right moment.
At one point, the Spanish side had 68% possession, dictating the tempo and pushing Arsenal back. Julián Álvarez was the main threat, testing Raya from the edge of the box in the 14th minute.
But control didn’t translate into real chances.
At the other end, Arsenal were more direct. In the 15th minute, Gyokeres found Ødegaard inside the box, but his effort was blocked at the crucial moment by Jhonny Cardoso.
The game remained tight — with little margin for error.
Atlético had presence but lacked precision. Álvarez had another chance from a header on 28 minutes but sent it over. Arsenal responded through Madueke, who cut inside and fired just wide.
Then the key moment arrived.
In the 44th minute, Zubimendi won the ball back and fed Ødegaard, who slipped Gyokeres into the box. The forward was brought down by Hancko, and the referee pointed to the spot.
Gyokeres converted confidently. Oblak guessed the right way but couldn’t reach it.
1–0 Arsenal.
In tight games, the team that strikes first changes the script.
Atlético respond and find their way back
The second half shifted the tone.
Atlético came out more aggressive, increasing the tempo and applying sustained pressure on Arsenal.
In the 49th minute, Álvarez came close from a free-kick. Soon after, Lookman forced a strong save from Raya, and on the rebound Griezmann was denied by Gabriel Magalhães — a moment that captured the phase of the game.
The equaliser felt inevitable.
And once again, it came down to a detail.
In the 54th minute, following a corner, the ball dropped to Llorente, whose shot struck Ben White’s hand. After a VAR review, the penalty was awarded.
Álvarez stepped up and struck it with power.
No chance for Raya.
1–1.
Two penalties, two goals — a game decided in the smallest moments.
Late pressure without a winner
The equaliser added more intensity.
Atlético pushed forward and created the better chances late on. Griezmann hit the crossbar in the 62nd minute with a sharp effort. Shortly after, Álvarez nearly caught Raya out directly from a corner.
The chances kept coming.
In the 73rd minute, Lookman had the best of them — beating his marker inside the box but finishing straight at the goalkeeper.
The final touch was missing.
There was still late drama.
In the 77th minute, Hancko was penalised again inside the box on Eze, initially given as a penalty. After a long VAR check, the decision was overturned.
The tempo dropped in the closing stages, with both teams showing more caution.
Their focus had already shifted to next week.

All to play for in the second leg
The result reflected the game: balanced, intense and decided by fine margins.
Atlético Madrid had more of the ball at key moments and created good chances, but couldn’t turn that into an advantage.
Arsenal, more direct, took their opportunity — but also had to withstand pressure.
In games like this, efficiency and composure matter as much as performance.
The tie now moves to London.
And after a game like this, one thing is certain:
The semi-final remains wide open.
