Best Player of the Opening Round of the 2026 World Cup: Who Was the Tournament’s First True Standout?

The opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an end.

As happens at every World Cup, some favourites lived up to expectations, others encountered unexpected challenges, and a handful of players used football’s biggest stage to introduce themselves to the world.

Between legendary veterans, emerging stars and individual performances capable of deciding entire matches, the opening round has already produced strong candidates for Player of the Tournament.

But before looking that far ahead, there is a more immediate question:

Who was the best player of the opening round of the 2026 World Cup?

The Offside has selected six performances that defined the start of this World Cup.

Ayyoub Bouaddi (Morocco)

Every World Cup introduces a new name.

Ayyoub Bouaddi may have been the first great breakout star of this edition.

At just 18 years old, the Lille midfielder made his World Cup debut against Brazil and played with the composure of someone appearing in his third or fourth tournament.

He never looked intimidated.

He never hid from responsibility.

And he controlled key areas of the game.

As Morocco managed to neutralise much of Brazil’s attacking threat and secure an important draw, Bouaddi was at the heart of everything, dictating tempo, recovering possession and driving transitions.

The numbers help explain the scale of his performance:

  • 91% passing accuracy (60/66)

  • 100% passing accuracy in the final third (16/16)

  • 6 ball recoveries

  • 5 interceptions

  • 9 duels won

More impressive than the statistics was the ease with which he played.

Bouaddi looked completely at home on football’s biggest stage.

And he will probably not remain at Lille for much longer after this World Cup.

Some performances introduce players. Others announce stars. Bouaddi belonged firmly in the second category.

Vozinha (Cape Verde)

If Bouaddi represented the future, Vozinha represented the endurance of time.

At 40 years old, the Cape Verde goalkeeper delivered one of the most emotional performances of the opening round, leading his side to a goalless draw against Spain.

While the reigning European champions pushed relentlessly, Vozinha turned every save into an act of collective resistance.

His numbers were remarkable:

  • 7 saves inside the box

  • 3 diving saves

  • 3 high claims

  • 1.46 goals prevented

The result secured a historic achievement.

Vozinha became the oldest goalkeeper ever to keep a clean sheet on a World Cup debut.

And he did it against one of the most talented teams in the tournament.

Not every historic performance ends in victory. Some become legends anyway.

Diomande (Ivory Coast)

The most attentive readers of The Offside may already know this name.

Back in March, Diomande featured in our list of 10 Under-21 Talents to Watch in 2026.

A few months later, he showed exactly why.

In Ivory Coast’s victory over Ecuador, the young forward was the most influential player on the pitch.

He did not score.

He did not register an assist.

But he controlled almost every attacking phase of the match.

His numbers tell the story:

  • 80 touches

  • 5 chances created

  • 11 duels won

  • 15 progressive carries

  • 22 passes in the attacking third

It was a thoroughly modern performance.

The kind that goes far beyond traditional statistics.

Another player already generating significant transfer interest, with Liverpool and PSG reportedly monitoring his progress.

Some players participate in games. Others make games happen. Diomandé clearly belonged to the latter group.

Alexander Isak (Sweden)

Isak’s season at Liverpool was interrupted repeatedly by injuries.

His World Cup debut served as a reminder of why the club invested so heavily in him.

Against Tunisia, Isak looked unstoppable once again.

Pace.

Power.

Movement.

Finishing.

Everything was there.

In Sweden’s 5-1 victory, the striker was directly involved in three goals while finding the net himself.

More importantly, he once again looked like a player capable of deciding the biggest matches.

When fit, very few forwards in world football combine as many qualities as Alexander Isak.

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

It is impossible to ignore Lionel Messi.

Even at 38 years old.

Even in what is likely his final World Cup.

Against Algeria, Argentina’s captain delivered another performance that seems to defy every rule associated with ageing.

Three goals.

A hat-trick.

Another historic night.

The numbers speak for themselves:

  • 6 shots

  • 4 shots on target

  • 3 goals

  • 2 big chances created

Messi could easily have seen his night end early following a dangerous challenge in the opening stages.

Instead, he stayed on the pitch.

And turned the match into yet another chapter in his seemingly endless collection of iconic moments.

The conversation around Messi is no longer about longevity. It is about how he keeps doing this.

Harry Kane (England)

If Messi produced the most memorable hat-trick of the round, Harry Kane may have delivered the most complete attacking performance.

In England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia — arguably the match of the opening round — the striker once again showcased everything that has made him one of the defining centre-forwards of his generation.

Two goals.

Two key passes.

Constant involvement in build-up play.

England struggled at times during the first half.

But they grew into the game after the break.

And Kane was at the centre of almost everything positive they produced.

Some strikers live to finish chances. Kane remains one of the few who can both create and finish at the highest level.

What Do You Think?

The opening round of the World Cup has already delivered stories, surprises and unforgettable performances.

Bouaddi announced himself to the world.

Vozinha defied time.

Diomandé confirmed his immense potential.

Isak rediscovered his best form.

Messi reminded everyone that he is still Messi.

Kane led one of the standout victories of the round.

Now we want to hear from you.
