Manchester City 3–0 Brentford: control, persistence and a City side still alive in the title race
Premier League | Etihad Stadium | May 9, 2026
Manchester City needed patience.
They needed persistence.
And they needed to turn dominance into something tangible.
After a first half full of attacking pressure but no reward, Pep Guardiola’s side finally found the breakthrough after the interval, beating Brentford 3–0 and keeping the Premier League title race alive.
The scoreline looks comfortable.
The game was anything but for a long time.
Possession without reward — and a City side that kept pushing
The first half was almost attack versus defence.
City monopolised possession, controlled territory and pinned Brentford deep inside their own half.
The numbers told the story: 69% possession for the home side, 15 shots and four on target before the break.
Brentford managed just one attempt — without testing the goalkeeper.
But dominance still wasn’t translating into the lead.
Control without efficiency also creates anxiety.
City created major openings, especially through the movement of Doku and Semenyo out wide, but rushed decisions and Brentford’s defensive resistance kept the game level.
The match felt like it was drifting toward one of those dangerous scenarios:
Complete control.
Very little penetration.
And constant risk of punishment on the counter.
Brentford kept resisting.
Even under pressure, they still looked emotionally alive in the contest.
The moment the game finally opened up
The second half began in exactly the same way.
City on the ball.
Brentford trying to survive.
But this time, the decisive moment arrived.
In the 59th minute, Doku started an individual run, briefly lost control of the ball, recovered it immediately and curled his finish into the corner.
1–0 City.
In tight games, imbalance often comes from improvisation.
The goal completely changed the emotional rhythm of the match.
Brentford had to step forward.
City suddenly found even more space.
Soon after, Foden forced Kelleher into a strong save, while Doku continued to dominate one-versus-one situations.
The second goal was coming.
And it arrived in the 74th minute.
Semenyo reached the byline, drilled a low cross into the area, the ball took a deflection and Haaland improvised a clever finish that slowly rolled into the net.
2–0.
It was an awkward goal.
But an important one.
Decisive goals are not always beautiful — sometimes they’re simply inevitable.
A City side that never stopped pushing
Even with the lead, City never slowed down.
Guardiola’s team kept pressing high, dominating possession and preventing Brentford from building any real momentum.
Foden forced another excellent save from Kelleher in the 82nd minute.
The third goal felt inevitable.
And it arrived deep into stoppage time.
At 91 minutes, Haaland received the ball on the edge of the area, held play up and slipped a pass into Marmoush, who controlled and finished calmly.
3–0.
Brentford still had one final chance through Igor Thiago’s header, but Donnarumma reacted well and the match was already decided.

The title race remains alive
The win keeps Manchester City fully alive in the Premier League title race.
With 74 points from 35 matches and a huge goal difference advantage, Guardiola’s side continue to apply pressure on Arsenal, who still have a game to play.
In races like this, winning is no longer enough — sustaining pressure becomes essential.
For Brentford, the defeat temporarily slows their push toward the European places.
They remain eighth, still close to the Conference League and Europa League spots, but with increasingly little margin for error.
What it means
This was a game about persistence.
City dominated from the beginning — but had to keep insisting before turning superiority into goals.
Brentford resisted for as long as they could.
But they spent too much time trapped inside their own half.
Against sides like this, surviving for long periods is rarely enough.
And this time, City eventually found the right moment to turn control into victory.
